Ive been reading everyone's posts about the strengths and weaknesses of individual tracks. i'd like to know what album everyone rates as their weakest and why.

For me its BUYV because the albums production is so weak by comparison, even though it includes some great Jonna era tracks like Nick of Time and Go Zone.

BUYV without a doubt for the reason you stated. Track wise it isn't bad, but it's let down horribly by lazy production.

  2.
For me, it's got to be the Aussie High Voltage. It sounds like a first album to me. The DC "sound" isn't there yet and some of the songs are fairly ropey. Some classics in there too, mind you, especially Soul Stripper.... If that's too obvious and too unfair an answer, then maybe BUYV because of the muggy sound.....

Least listened to albums = Aus HV, TRE, BB.

No such thing as a weak album mind you :)
  3.
Agree - no "weak" album, as all AC/DC albums are better than pretty much anything else I've heard. Least listened to is Aussie HV, by a country mile....

Do you think its reasonable to split this discussion along Brian and Bon lines? ie weakest album from each era?
  4.
I've got no problem with that. I never used to think of the band as having two eras, but nowadays, I do think about it a bit more. Probably deserves its own topic, but my reasoning might be more to do with plastic devil horns and the like than it has to do with the music....

I've never split them either but I'm starting to these days because they are now very, very distinct periods.

Ballbreaker is a good album, but weak when compared with the others.

raff - where would you place BB in relation to their entire catalogue?

  6.

I don't mind Ballbreaker either. some lazy fillers but some good tracks too.

i just wish they'd play the ballbreaker tour setlist

  7.
Well, BB is better than any other band album and worst than other AC/DC album, good but not brilliant.
  8.
I agree that the Ballbreaker Tour set was awesome, the best I've seen from the band. Dog Eat Dog, Girls Got Rhythm, Back in Black is the best opener I've ever seen, a bit of original thought from the boys doing the strip to Boogie Man... I thought it was a great set....

Black Ice. It was the first time the songs felt assembled out of riffs and less like cohesive songs, and then the production... WOOF.

It took me time to appreciate the back half, but the production alone makes it hard to dislike. Everything just punches so hard. Meltdown is like a modern RNRANP. The bluesy songs like CSS and HMB are just so much fun.

Toss up between BI and DDDDC.

    SUL isn’t far off either

Must have been fake tits. What a shame... if only somebody had pointed it out, the band would have come to their senses and kicked BOB to the curb while calling Mutt....

BUYV has some good songs and a lot of good riffs, but terrible production.
Ballbreaker has a pretty cool sound and production, but not many good songs and an awful lack of good riffs.

Their worst album: Blow Up Your Ballbreaker.

Blow Up your Video would have been a great album if Rick Rubin had produced it.

Especially around that time! He did records with The Cult, Danzig and Masters of Reality around then, they all sound like AC/DC and they all sound great.

Nah, the songs on BUYV aren't suited for a dry, naked production like Electric. The songs scream for Mutt. Unfortunately Mutt didn't hear them because he was busy with the supergroup Romeo's Daughter
  20.
The Unholy Trinity - 'Fly On the Wall', 'Blow Up Your Video' and 'Ballbreaker'. 'Stiff Upper Lip' may be worse than 'Fly On the Wall' - at least that album has balls.

Most people haven't heard the debut album by Masters of Reality which was recorded in 1988 by Rick Rubin.
If BUYV had this production, it could have been one of AC/DC's best albums.

Always loved this song from Masters Of Reality:

But i think Rubin works best with some more R&R/Bluesrock type songs with more staccato than sustain.
Electric sounded therefor good with Rubin but the songs on Sonic Temple were different and worked well the more wet production of Bob Rock

For me BUYV is their most "standard" hardrock album but with very good melodies. Mutt is great with melodies and could have made the overall production-sound and especially the vocal sound much better. Rubin could have worked with DDDDC and TNT.
