Posted By: MeanstreakI don't agree about Jimmy Page, he is one of the best songwriters in rock and especially among the very few great riffmasters. Both Page and May are great guitar players and musicians. But, when it comes to the riff Page has more of them to demonstrate.

There are a lot of riff writers in rock music. In terms of riffs, I don't know what he's done that puts him above, say, Tony Iommi.

He belongs to the group of the greatest riffmeisters, together with Iommi and Angus and Malcolm. Page wrote so many great riffs its mindblowing.

    And Keith Richards, of course.

    ^He's right, you know.

Page wrote some great riffs, but his playing sucks. Don't give me that "it's raw" or "sloppy in a good way" bullshit. The solo to Heartbreaker literally made me laugh out loud the first time I heard it, with those out of tune bends.

Quite immature and asinine comments. Page is one of the greatest players in rock. If you subjectively think he sucks, that is another story. The Heartbreaker solo is a groundbreaking movement in rock, even Angus is heavily influenced by those licks. Does he execute it cleanly and with great technical accuracy? No, but he didn't need to. Other guitaritsts did that later, and many of them sounded plain boring. And those huge bends, I guess that you call out of tune bends, that is essentially psychedelic tonalities.

Many people, me included, love Page's "sloppy in a good way" playing. It sounds unique and recognizable.
Just like his riffs, that are ominous and dangerous sounding, have the x factor that hits a spot in many music lovers.

Brain May is technically a better player and i like his creations and playing just as much (or even more) than Page's, but they have adifferent style. The 2 can be enjoyed side by side.

    Now back on topic:

"Okay here we go," says [Brian] Johnson in a statement. "Taylor was a lovely man, his smile was legend, his drumming intense and brilliant, and he could sing as well. When we gather to salute this man and his family, we do it as friends, we do it for him, and we do it with his band the Foo Fighters, who I know will do him proud. I'm honored to be part of it."

think they knew each other on more than a superficial

Brian gets on well with most people I assume, given his cheery disposition. Friends for me is someone you hang out with on a regular basis.
Not someone you exchange a few words with when you bump into them at an event or such. I suspect Hawkins kinda falls into the latter,
but hey...correct me if I'm wrong.

I always got the feeling that – quite rightly – there was a huge amount of good will directed at Dave and the Foo Fighters because of the shit show he endured/survived in Nirvana at a pretty young age. Not just Cobain’s suicde but the whole crazy Kurt ‘n Courtney circus that led up to it, the intense 24/7 media interest the dogged the ill-fated In Utero world tour. In Charles Cross’ book Heavier than Heaven he talks about how worried Geffen executives identified Dave as a mature presence and a potential tempering force in terms of steering the heroin-addicted Cobain away from the brink. I think they even encouraged them to share hotel rooms etc in the hope Dave would deter the more destructive hanger-ons. I thought that was very moving and impressive and said a lot about Dave’s character and decency – talk about growing up in public.

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Yeah, Angus was totally moved by those out of tune bends. Moved to never embarrass himself like that!

Calling that shitty playing "psychedelic" is an insult to psychedelic music. What lame excuses.

And I don't care how much you strawman me, I'm not going to preface every opinion of mine with "this is just my opinion guys, please don't think I'm claiming to be the objective arbiter of all reality!!!" Hypocritically, you did not qualify your characterization of my comment as "asinine" to be an opinion, so I will now rake you over the coals for thinking your opinions are objective facts...

You mean "haul over the coals" not ''rake over the coals".

You must be aware the LZ II is one of the most beloved hard rock albums ever made - are all the people who own it and love it idiots because they don't hear the technical faults that you do? And talking of Angus, aren't there some famously out-of-tune moments on LTBR?

Let's put it this way. If you were a new guitar player on the block, got some recognition for some good playing and was interviewed for Guitar World magazine and was quoted there or elsewhere expressing yourself in that manner, you would likely lose respect very quickly, unless you weren't really able to back that up with better guitar playing and songwriting than that of Led Zeppelin.

You can clearly hear that Angus was influenced by that solo, at least it would be strange if he wasnt:

I don't know about bends, but I got a general feel of sloppiness when I listened to Zep decades ago; that said, LZ II bothered me less than the first one.

Meanstreak, I'm unable to open the link you provided, but you do realize that LZ tend to be accused of ripping off the old blues greats... the stuff that Angus spent his youth listening to at libraries?
