    Queen were probably one of the first bands I ever heard. A childhood friend who was a year older than me loved them, so I got to hear them a LOT at his house

    I’m with Billy on this somewhat. Never been a fan outside a few songs that were catchy to me. Too many layers and tricks in their albums and music but Freddie made it look easy. I guess I only liked the voice and jealous over Brian Mays hair.

    Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor and Brian May 3 incredible singers, Roger Taylor can sing 5 octaves, thr guys are bloody geniuses

    I prefer AC/DC to Queen but could Angus/Phil sing like Brian/Roger? could they bollocks

    It's all relative - I respect and like Queen but, IMHO, their achievements are dwarfed by, say, Bowie.

    Of course it's all relative but seeing the amount of popularity they had throughout their whole career, they must have done something good/attractive.

    '70s Queen is versatile and brilliant. Just as good melodies as The Beatles. Probably even better.

    Eh, Queen has their moments, but their style is kind of thin and poppy, and Freddie Mercury only sounds good when he's really belting it, which isn't often enough. His breathy falsetto sounds icky.

    Well, there you go. The Beatles, there’s just no comparison. Play Pepper, then Queen's best album (Opera or Heart Attack), it's not even close . As I said above I like and respect Queen but IMHO they just don’t belong in that top tier – Beatles, Stones, AC/DC, Zeppelin, Who, Bowie etc. I see them more on a par with U2, Roxy Music, Elton John, Aerosmith – definitely top of tier 2 but tier 2 nevertheless.

    And yes I'm bias because I think AC/DC pisses all over Queen, personally I think AC/DC has a lot more character and their music has balls. I like Queen but sometimes their music was a little too try hard for me and commercial friendly.
    Queen have definitely got some great songs in their collection but they're no AC/DC.

I also think any of the Stones, as great as they are, are much more basic in their musical gifts than Queen. That's not a bad thing at all, since a lot can be done with simplicity and creativity. As far as Tool, I've no idea. I couldn't name any of their songs and pretty much everyone in the world can name a Queen song.

    AC/DC and Queen are completely different things. Queen is no AC/DC just as much as AC/DC is no Queen

    Queen made songs in many musical genres and they exelled in it. In that sense they are more musically gifted than The Stones, Zeppelin, ACDC.
    But not being the best in one specific genre like ac/dc or The Stones are.

    Totally agree about Page and May. Page's saving graces are that he's written some classic songs and his association with the rest of Zeppelin, but strictly in terms of merits as a guitar player, I've really never gotten the big hullabaloo about Jimmy Page. To me, Brian May doing an amazing dixieland jazz composition using just guitar overdubs is far more noteworthy than Jimmy Page getting stoned one day and deciding to use a violin bow on his guitar when he got tired of pentatonic noodling.

    I don't agree about Jimmy Page, he is one of the best songwriters in rock and especially among the very few great riffmasters. Both Page and May are great guitar players and musicians. But, when it comes to the riff Page has more of them to demonstrate.

    I was talking specifically in terms of vocals not song writing or instrument playing, Brian May and Roger Taylor are gifted singers, for Queen to have 3 incredible singers at the same time puts them in the most gifted ever in the rock genre imho

    Yeah but not to that extend and quality as Queen. Queen did Bombastic Hard Rock (Sabbath like), Operatic drama, Punkrock (almost Thrash), Disco, Ballroom Rock&Roll, Waltz, Piano based ballads, spacy rock and it's all musically in high quality.
    Stones stayed closed to their rhythm&blues/country rock most of the time and they did that very good of course.

    Albeit both groups lost their mojo in the '80s

    There are a lot of riff writers in rock music. In terms of riffs, I don't know what he's done that puts him above, say, Tony Iommi.

    There are a lot of riff writers in rock music. In terms of riffs, I don't know what he's done that puts him above, say, Tony Iommi.


    He belongs to the group of the greatest riffmeisters, together with Iommi and Angus and Malcolm. Page wrote so many great riffs its mindblowing.
