Hope you have a good one wherever you are & whatever you’re up to and that 2020 brings all your heart desires and not just AC/DC
    related.

My 18 year old son just informed me he’s getting drunk in a Sydney bar with his new Aussie mates, AC/DC on full blast - if you happen to be in the neighbourhood,
let me know he’s OK :)

As I am informed, both Alex Lebanon and Dr Belford have one thing in common. Their rock God is Bryan Adams.

So, consequently, to the honor of the two Messieurs and Mr. Adams:

Merry Christmas AL. I’m 3 hours behind Sydney but haven’t heard any reports that your son’s in strife - relax :)

May everyone have a safe, fun, or otherwise tolerable (for those of you like my dad) Christmas!

  3.
There’s a mad and bad move afoot in the UK for radio DJ’s to de-list THE GREATEST CHRISTMAS SONG EVER WRITTEN BY A FUCKING COUNTRY MILE because of the use of the word ‘faggot’. I really don’t get it – the two warring characters in the song are SUPPOSED TO BE unpleasant piss-heads and reprobates, not the chairpersons of the college Diversity Society – so their vulgar vocabulary seems totally authentic. And it doesn’t (and didn’t in 1987 either) mean the Pogues are condoning homophobia or whatever the charge is. So here is the only truly indispensable Christmas song complete with its brilliantly ribald lyrics.

    Fairytale of New York
    The Pogues

    It was Christmas Eve babe
    In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
    The Rare Old Mountain Dew
    I turned my face away
    And dreamed about you
    Got on a lucky one
    Came in eighteen to one
    I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
    So happy Christmas
    I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true
They've got cars big as bars
    They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
    On a cold Christmas Eve
    You promised me
    Broadway was waiting for me
    You were handsome
    You were pretty
    Queen of New York City
    When the band finished playing
    They howled out for more
    Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
    We kissed on a corner
    Then danced through the night
The boys of the NYPD choir
    Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
    For Christmas day
    You're a bum
    You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
    You scumbag, you maggot
    You cheap lousy faggot
    Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last
The boys of the NYPD choir
    Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
    For Christmas day
    I could have been someone
    Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
    When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
    Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you
The boys of the NYPD choir
    Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells are ringing out
    For Christmas day

The Pogues were the first band I can remember who had an openly gay member. I hardly think they were homophobic as some suggest

you can buy faggots in food shops up and down the country...

Faggots are meatballs made from minced off-cuts and offal, especially pork (traditionally pig's heart, liver, and fatty belly meat or bacon) together with herbs for flavouring and sometimes added bread crumbs. It is a traditional dish in the United Kingdom, especially South and Mid Wales and the English Midlands.

    Probably not!
It's crazy times, I really never thought I'd be one of the "it's political correctness gone mad!" types but for all the good PC has done to lessen real discrimination its worst excesses are giving it a bad name and are frankly fascistic. Fairytale of New York is one of the few things about Christmas we can all agree on - it's fucking brilliant and timeless - and the idea that it's going to be banned (because you just know this isn't going away) is scary and wrong.

Shane M was unrepentant and rightly so.

I am one of the "it's political correctness gone mad" people, and this is a classic case of why. It is very bad press for those people that should be offended, by things that really are offensive, and the PC Brigade do this all the time. They think that the minorities might be, or should be offended by the smallest and most harmless things, when really they're not.

Mind you, I suppose we are in the season of snowflakes! ;)
