Wait a minute. Which song is Jon taking about? Times Likes These that I posted (and was awesome) or that new song they played, Shane Shane?

No hate here. Great band. New single Shame Shame wasn't what I was after but it's hooky and after playing it a few times it's cool. Good to see something slightly different

Ah, I was talking about Times Like These. Haven't heard the other one.

That version of Times Like These is great! And obviously done because of the US election.
  1.
Foo Fighters are pretty good. "Wasting Light" and "The Colour and the Shape" are top notch albums. Dave Grohl is an incredibly talented musician and a class act in an industry filled with a lot of big egos - much like the guys in AC/DC.
With that being said, I think that it's somewhat amusing and occasionally annoying that unlike AC/DC, the Foos are never tarred by the media for being "formulaic", when they are in my opinion they are.
Foo Fighters are also often heralded as a "hard rock" band, and while I agree that they're not quite Fleetwood Mac, they sound rather tame compared to AC/DC.
You can see in their cover of "Let There Be Rock" that Grohl and co. simply can't rock as hard as a bunch of guys who are 20 years older than them.
With that being said, live and let live. I enjoy them both.

I was talking about the new song. I have also heard parts of the new album, and it's much closer to Concrete and Gold than anything Wasting Light and Colour (as Iratehunter has accurately depicted).

ROTFL, I thought Times Like These is the new song. Sorry, as you may know I'm not the biggest fan of the FF.

First two albums are good, but they started losing that punky edgy element after that.
That is where I started losing interest, although I still keep up with what they are doing.

The old harder edge crops up in the odd song here or there but mostly it's just straight ahead by the numbers safe FM Radio rock.

Wasting Light was a good return to more energy but they dropped off again after that.

The new song is terrible. Will probably be their first album I don't bother checking out after hearing that, shame shame.
  3.
Big Foo fan. New song blows. What a bore.
  4.
I just watched the Foo Fighters' performance of Shame Shame on SNL.

It's the equivalent of AC/DC playing on SNL in 1985, and busting out Danger.

    Shame Foo Fighters. SHAME.

And those two soccer moms on backing vocals? Yeesh.

By all means, Grohl is a great artist, but the problem is HE KNOWS it !!! After I saw him take active part in crappy shows like America's Got Talent and the like, you could see he had stumbled onto loads of dough and this changed his spirit of r n r :):)
  6.
Still the most boring rock band of modern times.

    Not hate.

Just boring beige rock for the masses.
  7.
I like the Foo Fighters. I think they're a really good band. They're no AC/DC, of course, but they're still a good Rock band. We are now in a generation where there are very few Rock bands in the music scene that are in the limelight so we should appreciate a Rock band doing well in the popular music scene. I know they're not everyones cup of tea though. Each to their own but I like them.
  8.
Great band. Last two albums were shite though. This one looks to be about the same

That's indeed the case and that's all. If you love beige (what a great term, BB) rock that suburban soccers mom love, go right ahead. You won't convince the people like me and BB otherwise, and we won't convince you.

    They are bad;
    - Safe radio ”rock”
    - That annoying grin of the surfer drummer
    - Pat Smear moving around like a pile of Yello, wobbly-wobbly
    - Other members look dangerous and fierce as Ned Flanders

I like Dave Grohl but this band, its image and music - blaaaaah

You know you've got solid footing when 3 of your 4 complaints about a band are based on their looks. ; )

They just kind of get to be "the rock band" by default. They're modern enough to get out of the vintage / nostalgia trap. Grohl has enough cred from Nirvana and QOTSA... they can just wheel them out and they'll do an enthusiastic, workmanlike version of Whole Lotta Love and nobody will be offended. It's all agreeable and safe and it just doesn't really move the needle for me. Grohl is so much more interesting as a drummer than he is as a rhythm guitarist.

That said, I definitely understand why he prefers doing what he's doing over being behind the kit. I have a major depth of love for all kinds of rock, all sorts of eras and styles, and I can't do the Foos. And it's not like I wouldn't love to be a fan of a modern rock band that can sell arenas and actually puts out contemporary music. But I find them just so... damn... blah.

Listen to a song like White Limo and then listen to a QOTSA song like Millionaire, maybe superficially similar songs, and just *feel* the difference in your body :).
  11.
I don't like their stuff, but it's ridiculous to be elitist about all of this anyways. Whatever floats your boat is good. I'm at the very least glad that rock still exists in one form or another.

    Hell yeah, The Wildhearts!!!

    Like the Foo's also.
C'mon everybody, Dave Grohl came out of Nirvana (love it or like it, it was one of the big bands of the early 90's) and after Nirvana was done he made his own band which is even bigger now.
Hats off to Mr. Grohl and he seems to be one of the nicest guys in business.

For me there are a lot of "Killer tunes of the Foo's, can't hear things like "Safe radio rock". But on the other side of the coin, there are also a lot of filler on the albums.

Conclusion: I love Dave, Nirvana & The Wildhearts, i really like the Foo's, but is there a Foo Fighters album for the "desert island"? No the most, if not all are to inconsistent

Ps: The new song is, well ...

I understand the complaint of their sound being "beige", which is kinda true unfortunately.

But you can't argue they aren't good at what they're doing. Yes it's "mainstream rock" and very much intended so.

And they're really solid and make really solid albums.
So, sure it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, but they are no "Nickelback" or whatever.

There aren't *that* many solid big rock acts around anymore, at least the Foo Fighters still hold the torch for it.
  12.

Quite true. I'll put it this way: Nickelback are not as bad as people want 'em to be, and Foo Fighters are not as good as people want 'em to be. Mainstream rock that does nothing for me. All my respect to Grohl though since he managed to make Foo Fighters bigger than Nirvana; considering he started out as a drummer, that's not something that you see everyday. Who was the last drummer who became that big as a songwriter/singer, Phil Collins?
  14.

Flanders and Lovejoy are more rnr

The Wildhearts are twenty times more interesting musically than the Foo Fighters could ever dream of being

Complete polar opposites to my ears

I'm as much a fan of the Foo Fighters as of AC / DC. Even though Concrete and Blonde was too extreme a Pop advance, Dave Grohl and his gang are untouchable. The new single Shame Shame rather tasteless is not a priori representative of the new Album Medecine at midnight.
