Figured I'd make a seperate thread since this would be an interesting topic to bring up.

What's the consensus of The Beatles around here? I know this was talked about a couple years ago, but let's see what the new folk have to say.

I personally think they're as overrated as a band can get. Not a patch on what came after them.

Some points that pop up in my mind:

    - songwriters with a gift for catchy melody and arrangements

    - songs that are more complicated than you expect on first listen

    - in the begining doing the same as all the other great bands in the 60s did; play music that was influenced by their '50s heroes, especially Berry. So not exceptional but screaming girls just made their statue bigger than they would earn with their music only.

    - extended their musical horizon in the later stage of their career and being the first to fully use the studio tricks in their music. That made them the most influencial band in pop music. They were the godfathers of pop music if you like

    - made some terrific albums in a row in the mid and late sixties.

I appreciate and like much of their work.

Big fan, and probably an ever bigger George Harrison fan. Saw Paul McCartney in 2015 (at Liverpool no less) and it was an unbelievable experience, he played 3 hours and he has such a rich catalogue that the whole set was great, something i'll never forget.

Don't listen to the early Beatles albums much, as I think they sound outdated now (They were recorded nearly 60 years ago now and it shows in the general sound of them), but Abbey Road is my favourite, and big props for the White Album

But so many great and iconic songs over that decade, with 3 very talented songwriters and melody-makers

I agree, overrated as hell. Though I suspect you'd have a more complete understanding and appreciation of them if you'd actually been around during their heydays,
which I suspect a lot of guys on this forum were not (or at least too young to fully understand them at the time). Some of their stuff is just fuckin' brilliant, like the song DayTripper and it's amazing musicvideo.
You can't doubt their legacy, influence and quality though when guys/bands like Lemmy, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, Black Crowes, David Bowie, Cheap Trick and Phil Rudd sing their praises/do tribute.

But it all comes down to opinion, the world at large will always hail the Beatles as a far greater band than either Motorhead or AC/DC in terms of innovation, popularity and influence. No matter what we think.

I have yet to hear a song by them that really moves me. The odd track here and there. I have tried to develop an appreciation and own Revolver, White Album, Abbey Road, Sgt Peppers but nothing has ever really engaged my guts or my soul.

    Agreed.

I prefer the later years from '66-'69. The early years were like any other boy band today with one slight difference: talent.

I don't know if overated is the right word though as the cultural legacy they left was so immense. They influenced a hell of a lot of great musicians, from Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath, through to Kurt Cobain.

I think to really appreciate them fully, you probably had to be there at the time. A bit like Zeppelin. Considering what else was about and all that. Easy to forget what went before and what has come after with hindsight.

Well, that's the thing. They came BEFORE all that. They are probably responsible for a lot that came after. I'm not the biggest Beatles fan but they have written an INSANE amount of pop catchy songs that are really fun to listen to that formed the backbone of music to come. And they have so great heavier tracks like Helter Skelter, Sgt Pepper, I Want You (She's So Heavy)

I guess you had to be there at that time to understand it. There's a lot of stuff I'd rather listen before the Beatles but you can't deny the impact and influence they had on the music world. They changed it , forever.

Watch the new documentary "8 days a week" really is the stuff of dreams at the start. They rose so rapidly, but little known fact about the Beatles is that they where pretty tough and battle hardened. Playing in the cavern in Liverpool they really aren't their stripes

You've never known real depression unless you've sat and listened to all the Beatles albums back to back on vinyl.

A friend of the family wanted to sell some old records he'd got stored in the loft a few years ago. He knew I was into vinyl (and selling it from time to time) so asked me to take a look. I expected nothing but worthless Elvis singles and got the surprise of my life when he came round with boxes of good stuff. All the Beatles LP's that he's bought at the time, Kinks, Hendrix and a few Floyd etc

Being the kind of anal vinyl seller i am, i always play everything through at least once to make sure i note any problems to mention on the listings.

That was the LONGEST week of my life. Talk about fucking ear torture.

At least the Hendrix raised the mood afterwards along with the grand i pocketed from it all.

Essentially this. They matured, each album expanded upon the last. Tons of great song writing, they were pioneers in the craft really, and very much helped shape what came after them.

They did a bit of it all, from the over all style to the production of the records, and it was done very well. To say they just recycled the same old same others at the time did is silly. They did do much more than that.

I prefer the later stuff myself, but even the early albums have some jems. I would say Day Tripper is as important as Satisfaction when it comes to Rock 'N Roll tunes.

Overtime I have grown to like them a lot more,as I have began to expand my musical pallet,I always enjoyed the hits, but it's the odd tracks on the albums I end up enjoying the most. They do have a lot more to them I had never known about, and it took time combing through the rather large list of tunes to find the good stuff. It amazes me to hear some things that were being done during that time.

Hey Bulldog,Paperback Writer,Back In The USSR,Dear Prudence,We Can Work It Out,Ticket To Ride ect.

The vocal melodies were quite an achievement as well.

It is true that they do suffer from being arguably the biggest band to ever exist essentially, over exposure is not even close to how you describe them.

    Massively known no doubt.

I can get that some people are sick of them entirely or never liked them period.I get the feeling they are overrated, however given that they have such a variety of styles, I would have thought surely most would at least acknowledge what they contributed to music.

Those Beatles records helped clear the path for rock music and how records in general were produced to this very day. All the layering of instruments, and vocal harmonies that seem normal to us now where ground breaking then.

Crazy to think how much they did in such a short amount of time, quit on top too...

How the fuck do you label Citizen Kane 'boring'? I watch it about once a year and always finds new depths and nuances to appreciate - yes, it was revolutionary but it's also just a brilliant portrait of a life.

As for the Beatles, the run of Revolver, Sgt P, WA & AR is as perfect as any run of four albums rivalled only by the Stones, AC/DC, Dylan and Bowie - and none of those four acts evolved with the protean, lightening speed of the Beatles. I mean they went from Help (great song btw) to A Day In The Life in two years - TWO YEARS - extraordinary does not cover it, it's verging on supernatural.

Even the early Beatles, well prior to their maturation as songwriters, is outstanding ... a lot of their early covers are unsurpassed decades later.
Twist and Shout ... if there's a better version than the Beatles' I'd like to hear it. <...Crickets...>
The Chuck Berry covers are also timeless ... Roll and Roll Music, Roll Over Beethoven ... BRILLIANT. Compare that to the (cough) School Days by a certain other act, blows them away.

Exactly, everything they did, they did brilliantly. I'll always prefer the Stones but I would never try and make a case that they're a greater band because, objectively, I don't think you can - the Beatles are the Mozart of popular music - their 42nd greatest song would be in anyone else's Top Five.

The fact that hardcore AC/DC fans, who admire the intricacies and craftsmanship of Malcolm and Angus' songs, can sit there and completely disrespect and depreciate The Beatles is completely beyond me. The more I get to understand their carrer, the more aware I am about how great and and responsible they were for all the music that we listen nowadays. I've always been a great fan of The Beatles, I grew up listening to the white album and some old cassettes from their earlier pop years.

    Best band ever.

What does overrated mean? To me it means that the subject in question didn’t really deserve the accolades that it received or receives for two reasons:

First – it got praise and recognition incongruent to what said subject actually did – or –

Second- said subject didn’t actually earn the praise and recognition that it has received, in other words, it was a sham.

Neither of these two cases apply to the Beatles. Are they my ideal band? No. Their music doesn’t really move me, but I don’t see how anyone can label them as overrated. I dare say on this website that they were far bigger than AC/DC has ever been, at least culturally.

My perspective is purely an American one, and in school, part of our studies on the 60’s involves the Beatles invasion. Ed Sullivan. Playing Shea Stadium.
WABC, radio icon, is legendary regarding the Beatles. No other band stirred such fervor and controversy as the Beatles. There’s even a webpage devoted to WABC and the Beatles: http://www.musicradi...

The Beatles were some of the first to move beyond singles and embrace albums, especially concept albums in the rock/pop genre. The Stones could be argued as doing so as well, which isn’t it funny that the Stones are still around, but they didn’t create the same sort of stir that the Beatles did?

What about their music? It isn’t my favorite, but it’s certainly not undeserving of the praise. How many number ones did they have again? This isn’t a band that let others write for them. They were no Milli Vanilli. They were the real deal, whether you cared for them or not. They wrote catchy, toe tapping tunes that sold, long before Mutt Lange came along. The Beatles were hard workers, to the point that it drove the wedges between them and lead to their disbanding.

Even their lives beyond the Beatles tells a story. Three of the four members went on to have highly successful solo careers. Can Kiss say that? Ringo was fine in his own right, but not as visible as the other three. John Lennon was a giant at the time of his murder. When WABC switched to the talk format, his song “Imagine” was the last song played. George Harrison and Paul McCartney both went on to have very respectable solo careers as well, with many of their songs well known. Not even AC/DC can make that claim to fame. When AC/DC members go on their own, you hardly hear about them, and that’s because the genius of AC/DC was in the Youngs and Youngs only, contrasting to the Beatles who had 3 musical geniuses and one not too shabby drummer.

Therefore, the Beatles are not overrated. They deserve the accolades and praise that they have received. They earned it on their own too. They’re not my favorite, but I can’t knock them because of that.

Edit: Come to think of it, the Beatles were like a "Super Group" in reverse. Whereas a Super Group is generally formed from titans in their own field, like "The Firm", the Beatles were formed from young guys just starting out and then after disbandment, went on to be giants in their own right. What are the odds that a group of guys get together at such a young age and find such success, and do so because they are truly great musicians?

The Beatles were in the basement with the Stones, Hendrix, The Who, Zeppelin and a load of others.

When I was 9 these came out and they got a lot of play. Older brothers were both fans. For me, absolutely amazing songs. Listened to a lot of Wings around the same time. Solo Harrison came later and then, a bit to my surprise, solo Lennon. Ringo's a nut, bless him.
