AC/DC news and discussions: What does the band do immediately after a show to avoid the crowd?

    Since the forum is getting stale, I figured I'd ask a question I've wandered for years... What does the band tend to do immediately after a show? I remember seeing a video of Iron Maiden riding away in a van (incognito) and they got stuck in traffic... the band members were very nervous they would be discovered by the streets full of fans, haha

    So what does AC/DC do? Do they tend to hang around back stage a few hours until the crowd disperses? What if they're at an ampitheater type venue and there is only one road in/out? Surely there are fans that wait and try to catch them coming out the back door!?

    I would assume they shower off and relax for a bit before waiting to leave. They used to do backstage meet and greets where they would sign autographs, take pictures and have a chat but that stopped once the black ice tour began. I'd have to assume that stopped due to a combination of age/tiredness and malcolm's dementia.

    On the last two tours they have immediately hit the road. I mean, off the stage, straight to the van and off to the hotel. If you want to intercept them at the hotel you need to leave before the encores start, or your stuck in the crowd.

    They all climb into a big road case with 'THE BOYS' written on the side. It's very large. Inside, there are bunk beds, a shower, two colour TVs and a kitchenette.

    Got exact info from warm up band on the occasion of one ROB tour concert - it's simple as that - AC/DC arrived just few minutes before meteorite intro started and left the place immediately after the show.

    Not disputing this necessarily, but I'm sure on the BI tour rider there was a clause saying fill the dressing room fridges with Heineken 15 minutes *after* band hits the stage... So maybe sometimes they'd hang around a while? Or no?

    It was a great read, that rider. 5 oxygen tanks and an ashtray in every dressing room...

    I believe, on some occasions (especially in arenas like MSG etc) they spent some time backstage after the show. Mine info came from large open-air show.

    Edit info: Slightly remember some list what should be prepared in backstage. IIRC there were also Gatorade and some chocolate bars (Mars, Snickers) :)

    I wonder who actually eats the food and drinks the drinks on something like AC/DC's rider. Yeah, the band might have a bit themselves, but the rest? Arena staff? Thrown out?

    Growing up in the streets of Manchester (UK) all the large bands had to come to the Apollo, a 2000 (wish) capacity hall. So we always waited at the stage door after and got the autographs of some amazing bands (Metallica, Maiden, Motorhead etc...) Sad that those days are gone, but not practical for a 40000 - 80000 capacity arena I guess.

    My friends and I stayed behind after the show at the London stadium in June 2016 (Rock or Bust tour). Despite the stadium staff insisting the band had returned to their hotel as soon as they had gone off stage, this seemed illogical to me. It would be impossible to get from the stage and onto the road before 60,000 people, many of whom were edging towards the exit before the encore.

    We waited for about 2-3 hours and watched as Axl Rose and the other band members went past in their individual cars at approximately 5 minute intervals. Last was Angus, who stopped and got out to pose for photos and sign autographs for the 20 fans waiting. What a legend.

    For the last couple of tours of NA, they'd split straight for the hotel (if staying in the same city) or head directly to the airport for their private jet; they flew just about everywhere.

    Interestingly though, they still kept a fleet of buses (5 or 6, if I remember correctly) loaded up (including stocked with food, drinks and ice) and ready to go at the end of each gig in case inclement weather left them unable to fly. The one bus driver I chatted with said that he was essentially getting paid to drive an empty bus from gig to gig, as the band had yet to need them up to that point in the tour.

    I can answer this.

    I met the lads in Vancouver on the Rock or Bust tour. My band was recording at the Warehouse and we happened to be staying at the same hotel as them.
    I bumped into Stevie the first morning we were there and had a great chat to him, also later that evening and the next morning.
    Totally surreal for a lad who worships them (the reason I play guitar and SG's), I'll go into further detail this whole story some other time.

    Anyway, they had us as backstage guests when they hit Melbourne a few months later.

    After the show they came in and chatted with everyone for a reasonable amount of time, we were all having a beer or 26 (mainly us and other guests/family notably Stevie jnr - LAD)
    talking shit, having a laugh.
    Beano and Ang didn't come in, but we caught up with Angus later. Beano was crook so I believe he went straight to bed. As soon as he sung the first line of
    Rock or Bust I knew he was under the weather, he was fairly off so was to be expected basically.

    Then after that it was into black vans.

    IDK about ac/dc, but lots of bands take whatever is supplied on the tour rider with them. So even if they never set foot in the dressing room, all the food and drinks will get packed up & taken with.

    I'm sort of disappointed that AC/DC did not stipulate 1000 Bensons on their rider.

    After the 2015 Glasgow concert we were standing in the queue to the train station and approximately 1 hour after the show there was a black van (maybe 2 or 3) with tinted windows passing us by and people were clapping and cheering them so I guess it was the band. I don't remember any other cars, I think the road was blocked by police. I saw the same cars in front of a luxury hotel before the show.

    I remember reading once that at one of their concerts durng the BIB tour Brian actually did thank the fans for their support and after the show Malcom got all angry about it and essentially told Brian not to do it again, now IDK if that's actually true or not but if it is true, IMPO and I'm probably going to get a lot of shit for saying this Malcom should have been punched in the face for essentially acting like an ungrateful prick towards the fans who stuck by and supported them even after Bon's passing.

    I wish, when these guys are good and retired, that at least one of them would write a book. I know Angus never will, no matter how much money is involved. If he did I would expect it to be the bubble gum version of how things were. A book by Brian or Cliff, or maybe Phil, would be awesome. I wonder if they are all under contract not to be able to do that. Id like to read the story, the real story, warts and all. It’s just weird how tight lipped everyone in ACDC are.

    Y&Y certainly have a no disclosure clause in the Acdc band memeber contract. Hell, given the two of them, they probably listed each other in it, so they themselves can’t speak

    Euro leg 15 and 16 ROB, 5 black Merc S. off stage, in car and out to hotel. unless there were a lot of guests in "home" locations (Arnhem, Londen, Dusseldorf…)
    dont remember what show it was, but i have seen the mercs lining up behind the stage, and before the stage lights were out, Mercs gone.

    I remember at the SUL tour here in Orlando I headed out before the of ftabtr to the back of the arena hoping for an autograph or photo. About 10 min later two tour buses came flying out of the garage. First one had Cliff and Phil (the lights were on). Second one had to be Angus Brian and Malcolm..lights were off.

    From my experience on big festivals, bands have their own VIP backstage but they don't spend much time in there. It's pretty common to arrive 45 mins before the show to warm up and leave 45 mins max after the show to chill out. Motley Crue at Hellfest went directly from the stage to their tent/backstage and probably stayed there to change clothes or so before leaving (I saw them). Slash followed suit, but of course the bigger the band is the less they spend time at the venue/festival usually.

    Glad you got to meet Angus man. I waited outside for about 2 and a bit hours after Manchester in the hope of meeting Axl. I had been awake for something daft like 30 hours by this point and had to get back up to Scotland to meet a deadline the following morning and called it quits. Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown past us though - fella at security said the band left immediately after the show, all of them leaving in blacked out vans. The few others stayed on but I don't think they had any success. Great show regardless.

    I received an autograph from Axl during the RoB tour. Angus was also around before Axl. I already had his autograph and hence opted for a selfie instead, since I probably just had a few seconds of his time. Axl signed my Rock Or Bust LP cover instead. Many guys here would deem it as sacrilege. In any case, without Axl the tour would have gone bust.

    Where does this idea come from? Just because they're not dishing the dirt on every little thing does not mean they're under NDAs. For example, Brian did speak about his departure and the circumstances leading to it, and Angus did speak about his brother's illness. If you go back through all the interviews they've ever done, they're shared tonnes of great stories about their career.

    I understand why AC/DC have had a tendency to play their cards closer to their chest when it comes to the media, as there was that period when the media would lambaste them, and that's something the band have not forgotten. Rightly so. These days it's almost refreshing that a band is not airing every bit of dirty laundry just to really wring everything they can out of their notoriety. Frankly, it's something I hope AC/DC don't do.
